Red flags in a hiring process
A red flag here is something a candidate experienced in a hiring process, not a label on a company. These are the ones candidates can pick when they share, with what each one means.
The red flags candidates pick
- Ghosted: They stopped answering, with no end to it.
- Eternal wait: Weeks passed between each step.
- Did they read my CV?: Questions showed nobody read it.
- Bait & switch: The role turned out to be another role.
- Free labor quest: Unpaid work that looked like real work.
- Interrogation: The room felt like a test, not a talk.
- Too many rounds: More meetings than the job needed.
- Moved at the last minute: Moved or cancelled at short notice.
- No reason given: A no arrived with nothing behind it.
- Pay kept secret: They would not say what it paid.
- Talked down to me: The tone was not respectful.
- Only a robot, no human: Every step was automated, nobody answered.
- Cold vibes: The people seemed uninterested or distant.
- Out-of-line questions: They asked about age, family plans, health or beliefs.
- Chaos: Wrong links, wrong times, a no-show, nobody knew the plan.
What should you do when you spot one?
Ask about it early and directly: how many steps are left, when you will hear back, what the pay is, and whether a task is paid. A clear answer is information. No answer is information too.
Questions to ask the recruiter
- How many steps are there, and what is each one?
- When will I hear back after this stage?
- What does the role pay?
- Is there a task? How long should it take, and is it paid?
- If it is a no, will I get feedback?
See which of these candidates picked at the company you are applying to, before you apply. After your own process, share the ones you ran into.
